Night Streets - Fashion Portrait Photoshoot

I wouldn’t consider myself to be a fashion photographer, not by a long shot. I don’t know the first thing about fashion, I just know what might make a cool photo. This shoot was something I had been wanting to try for years, but didn’t have the balls to try at night in the streets of Durban, South Africa.

On moving to Sydney however, and feeling safe walking around most parts of the city, I made a plan to give it a try. I managed to get a small team together and we planned it for early winter, it only gets properly dark at around 8 or 9pm in summer.

The location scouting proved to be a bit harder than I thought it would be. I wanted somewhere with a lot of options for fluorescent signage, which proved to be a bit tricky in the CBD. I spent 2 evening walking around some areas I thought would have what I was looking for, and came across a walking street in the “Chinatown” of Sydney that had a couple cool options.

Wardrobe was the next challenge. I wanted items that would reflect light from the flash and ambient light to get that streaked look. Chivonne did a great job sourcing items, I love working with a  team of people who know their craft, each adding their best parts to a shoot brings the level of the whole shoot up, filling in each others weak spots.
